After School Tutoring Program
Why
Our
school mission statement is based on the belief that all children can
learn. Our mission is to provide a
well-rounded education to all students and to give each student the opportunity
to achieve his/her highest potential in an appropriate educational
setting. As a school system we are
committed to providing the supports necessary for our students to achieve. These supports must extend beyond the normal
school day. Hence, our staff is
committed to providing after school tutoring services to targeted students in a
structured nurturing environment. Please
note that the intent of this program is not after school day care. Our Extended Day Program is in place for
latch key children.
Who
Participation
is voluntary in nature - parents cannot be forced to have their child
attend. Participation can be
day-to-day, week-to-week
or ongoing as needed. Students who are
not working up to potential with homework, test, and or quiz preparation will
be highly encouraged to attend as well as those students who are demonstrating
difficulty in mastery of grade level skills.
Keeping
in tune with the overall purpose of our tutoring program, students will be
referred for services by the following criteria:
Ø Ø Title 1
Specialist
Ø Ø RTI Specialist
Ø Ø Student
Assistance Team Recommendation
Ø Ø Individualized
Education Program Recommendation
Parent
referrals independent of teacher support will not be approved.
Students
attending from grades 1-2 will receive instruction in the following curricular
areas; mathematics,
reading and
spelling. The instructional delivery
model will be small group instruction with an emphasis on drill
and
practice. Students attending in grades
3-5 will be provided support services for homework, test and quiz preparation.
When
Our
After School Tutoring Program will begin on September 7, 2010 and will end on
May 12, 2011. Students in grades 1-2
will attend tutoring on Monday and Wednesday.
Students in grades 3-5 will attend tutoring on Tuesday and
Thursday. Tutoring will start promptly
at 3:30 and conclude at 4:30. Parents
will be expected to pick-up their child promptly and continued participation
will be contingent on this factor.
Parents will be required to sign their child out at the front
office.
Communication
The
success of our tutoring program will hinge on effective communication between
school and home. Continued parental
support is critical to the overall success of our program. Parents must find true value in the services
that are provided. Student achievement
and academic gains must be the end result.
Classroom teachers, with the support of the building level principal,
will be responsible for originating and maintaining open lines of communication
with parents. This communication must
originate through a face-to-face meeting or a phone call home to parents.
Parents
will be notified that a student has been recommended to attend our “After
School Tutoring program.” Once confirmation
is obtained that the students will attend, a start date will be set. This needs to be done in a manner that allows
time for our tutoring staff to prepare.
A tutoring referral form will be completed and submitted to the Tutoring
Coordinator. The final step in the
process will be “Written Parent Permission” for a student to attend. A form will be sent home for your
signature. Necessary instructional
materials will be provided to the Tutoring Coordinator in advance of the
tutoring session.
