The Tyler County Schools Special Education Department will conduct hearing and speech/language screenings during the 2026-2027 school year. Screening will be provided for students enrolled in Tyler County Universal Pre-K and kindergarten when previous screening results are unavailable. In addition, screenings will be conducted for students referred by parents or teachers, students entering a West Virginia school for the first time, and students who did not pass a previous screening.
The purpose of these screenings is to identify possible hearing and/or speech-language concerns at an early stage so that appropriate support can be provided. Difficulties in these areas may negatively affect a child's communication, learning, and academic progress.
Parents will be notified only if their child does not pass the screening. If additional evaluation is recommended, parents will receive screening results and recommendations within 30 days.
Hearing screening will consist of a pure-tone hearing test designed to assess auditory acuity. During the screening, students will listen to sounds at three different frequencies in each ear and respond when they hear the tone.
Speech/language screening may include activities such as naming pictures, following directions, and answering simple questions to assess communication skills.
Parents who do not wish for their child to participate in hearing and speech/language screenings during the 2026-2027 school year must submit a written objection within 10 days of this notice to:
